Until 6 Jan: Mark Rothko
The exhibition includes about 70 works of art, divided according to the
phases of the artist's poetic development: it includes small plaster
paintings, the so-called "Multiforms" canvases (filled with stains of
colour), the large canvases (among which "Mural" stands out), the square
shapes of the "Blackform" paintings and the late "black and gray" works.
Rothko was Russian by birth but American by adoption and maintained
himself through teaching until the critics and art world took notice of
him. This retrospective celebrates Rothko's ability to draw out
emotional strength through the universal language of colour. The curator
of the show is Oliver Wick. A cura di Oliver Wick. Sun, tue, wed

Collection in Mexico City. The collection is known for its
internationalism and features works that date from the 14th to the 20th
centuries and includes Italian artists (such as Canaletto and Tiepolo),
German artists, Flemish artists (such as Rubens) and French artists. The

Impressionism and Realism and show off the brilliant talent of the likes
of Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh...

Until 27 Jan: Pop Art! 1956 - 1968
Walter Guadagnini is the curator of the biggest exhibition to date
dedicated to Pop Art, a cultural and artistic movement that represented
the West through unforgettable images such as the Marilyn silk-screens
by Andy Warhol and the Coca Cola logo. The show is divided into four
sections: the first is dedicated to the object as merchandise, its
essence rendered and summarised in the logo; the second section focuses
on the stars and personalities of the time, such as astronauts Joe
Tilson and Derek Boshier; the third section is dedicated to
communication channels and forms of expression of popular culture such
as the cartoon; the fourth is about sex and the body as an erotic entity.
Pop art is art that collides – inevitably – with mass media; it offers a
document of society and of the spirit that pervaded the era.

Venere Vincitrice (10 major exhibitions: Canova and the winning Venus)
The second act in the "10 Great Exhibitions" series celebrates Antonio
Canova 250 years after the date of his birth. Nicknamed the new Phidias,
Canova represents the apotheosis of Italian neoclassicism, an artistic
period in which mythological subjects, political personalities and
metaphysical themes were explored. The Galleria Borghese will serve as
the venue in which to admire over 50 paintings, drawings and clay models.
16 major marble sculptures are also on display and include some
spectacular pieces, such as the "Three Graces", the "Sleeping Nymph",
"Amor and Psyche", the “Naiad” and the complete series of “Amorini”.

Until 3 Feb: Paul Gauguin. Artista di mito e
sogno (Paul Gauguin. Artist of myths and dreams)
Paul Gauguin was a symbolist deeply struck by the work of Cézanne and
Pissarro and was obsessed by the idea of pure and untamed painting and
by a quest to merge both art and life. Paul Gauguin was rejected by
France and considered subversive, he spoke using colour, clear contours
and rarefied atmospheres. He allowed his primitive and mythical
characters to inhabit a literary Eden, possibly in a quest to locate the
Peru of his infancy... Paul Gauguin will sate our hunger for beauty.

Until 17 Feb: In scaena. Il teatro di Roma
antica (In scaena. The theatre of ancient Rome)
This fascinating archaeological exhibition tells the story of an
essential component of Roman culture: the theatre. The exhibition opens
with about 70 works that explore the complex origins of theatre: its
Greek and Italic roots, the Etruscan contribution to its evolution, the
performances that evolved out of Magna Grecia. Another section is
centred on the structure of theatres and on set design, both aspects
that, with time, evolved their own style. The last part of the
exhibition is extremely effective and composed of an overview of the
protagonists of the theatrical experience: the actors – their miming
techniques and dramatic abilities – and the public, passionate about
this form of art made up of music, dance, singing and acting... Until

are on show in the Gallery of Pope Alessandro VII. Stolen and removed
from their original setting by unscrupulous merchants and then sold to
museums around the world, these works have returned to Italy thanks to
the collaborative efforts of the Carabinieri, the Judiciary and the
Ministry for the Arts. Louis Godard is the curator of this show that
contains pieces like Vibia Sabina, the Calyx Crater by Assteas, Antefix

Until 6 Jan: Emilio Vedova. 1919 - 2006
A major chronological retrospective dedicated to the highly original
Venetian artist, Emilio Vedova. The exhibition opens with the drawings
that mark Vedova's beginnings - back in the 1930s - and continues with
his first forays into the world of painting, inspired by the works of
Tintoretto, Rembrandt, and baroque and expressionist artists. The later
creations (dating from the 1950s) were born out of a more mature
artistry; this is when the geometric element of his work came to light.
The "Plurimi" series, that expressed a consciousness of the drama of
daily existence, are also very famous, as are the colourful works dating
from the 80s, the "Dischi" and "Bozzetti". Emilio Vedova: works of art
that speak of the love for art. Tue-sun h8,30-19,30

born in Macerata but chose to live and work in Rome, a choice that was
sealed by his decision to be known as Scipione. Refined painter,
fascinated by Goya, he left a profound mark in modern figurative art.

figures such as Cain or the blond mermaid. Paintings, drawings and films

relationship with his patrons. Palazzo Barberini is once again hosting
temporary artistic events and its launch show celebrates the architect
who designed the spaces of Palazzo Barberini, bringing to light his
pictorial talents.

Contemplation and thought were turned into something concrete: futurism
is where art finds expression. Established artists are included in the
exhibition - Pedro Cabrita Reis, Patrick Tuttofuoco, Anish Kapoor,
Tobias Rehberger with Olafur Eliasson – but also up-and-coming artists.

reconstruction of the universe" manifesto aimed at promoting futurism in
every aspect of life. Depero specialised in set design and musical

many paintings made out of wood and plaster but also two very particular
creations: video-animations projected on mega-drawings composed of resin,
olive oil, ink and cartoons. The sweet music of the videos amalgamates
with the delicateness of the drawings, and effectively recreates the
atmosphere of the traditional fairytales Khebrehzadeh was told during

touring various major European cities. The photographer's clearly
narrative aims incorporate the theatrical use of light, the fairytale

alienated society depicted by Crewdson reflects the neuroses and
anxieties of the artist, whose realistic take makes him one of the most
significant exponents of a technique known as 'staged photography'. The

| In the spotlight:
January in Rome |
3, 2, 1... and it’s
2007!!!
As per tradition Rome will end the year in style with a tantalising array of
events such as Fiorella Mannoia's live concert, the
captivating rhythms of the taranta conducted by Antonio
Sparagna, concerts and open-air initiatives such as the
"Piazza delle Meraviglie Semplici" hosted in Piazza
del Popolo, the Grinzing Village ice-skating rink
and the legendary Christmas market set in Piazza Navona.
Moving swiftly on, the month of January is also filled with art shows of
note. Big exhibitions include "Iliad in Rome",
"Petros Eni" and, still on for a few days, the
shows dedicated to Andy Warhol and
Paul Klee. Other current art events include
"Officina emiliana", "China.
Birth of an empire", and guided tours at the new
gallery in Palazzo Barberini.
January sees the reopening of the Barracco museum
after a lengthy restoration, the Ara Pacis hosts its first
exhibition, and the "100 Nativity Scenes"
and "Arterritory" exhibitions are still open.
And on to music this month! Elisa,
Francesco Guccini, Europe,
Enrico Rava, Kokani Orkestar
and the Orchestra of Piazza Vittorio will
illuminate the Eternal City's pop scene in the coming weeks.
Classical music aficionados will be seduced by operas,
refined concerts in churches and performances by
the Aventino Choir. Especially interesting this
month is Madrid’s Ballet de Flamenco and its
performance of "Carmen".
The city’s theatres are populated by legendary actors such as
Giorgio Albertazzi, Francesca
Reggiani, Paolo Poli,
Paola Quattrini, Enrico Montesano and
Rodolfo Laganà. Also on stage this month are
Johnny Dorelli and Antonio Salines, and a female
quintet made up of Caterina Costantini, Sandra Milo,
Corinne Clery, Eva Robin’s and Nadia Rinaldi. Worth seeing - and
listening to - are the musicals "Sweet Charity"
with Lorella Cuccarini, "Banda.25"
brought to the stage by Banda Osiris, and a
musical dedicated to the timeless figure of Peter Pan.
And if you still have time left over after all this culture, other
appointments of note in January include the high fashion festival
"AltaromAltamoda" and an inexhaustible series of
Christmas events for children and babies. |

One of the famous architects' most original works, a work that highlights
all the prodromi and instincts of the Baroque, has been brought back to its
ancient splendour in a restoration project lasting four months. During its
long restoration the sculpture remained exceptionally on show to the public
so that it could follow the careful process step by step. Bernini's bust of

Andy Warhol that is centred on spirituality. This exhibition, which explores
the historic phrase Jesus said to Mary Magdalene, allows us to enter into
the complexity and profundity of Warhol's thought. Warhol does not limit
himself to the question of believing and not believing, he personalises the
issue, starting with the most difficult questions that it raises. Tue-fri

Prolific German artist Paul Klee, who lived in the 19th and 20th centuries,

personal style based on abstract signs and symbolism. Later on his art
centred and specialised on the realisation of small drawings and
water-colours until the last period of his life, in which he was ill and

Until 18 Feb: L'Iliade a Roma (The Iliad in Rome)
"Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus' son Achilleus and its devastation,
which put pains thousandfold upon the Achaians [...]." Thus begins one of
the most famous poems in the world. This exhibition's intent is to be as
faithful as possible to the original poem. Its first section is in fact made
up of the work's so-called prodromes (premonitions), such as the Judgement
of Paris. A beautiful gallery has been filled with gods and heroes, and
